Tom Hageman

Born: Amsterdam, 1943

Overview: Thomas Steven Hageman is a renowned Dutch visual artist, illustrator and teacher. His work combines symbolism, fantastic realism and art-historical layers, with influences from mythology, literature and intercultural traditions.

Education and influences: Hageman studied at Academie Minerva in Groningen and developed into a master of anatomy, form theory and classical techniques. His stay in Turkey in the 1970s enriched his visual language with Eastern ornamentation and calligraphy. In 1992 he was a guest lecturer in Prague, which led to his thematic series on the imaginary city of Prague.

As a teacher at Academie Minerva (1976-1993) and founder of the Klassieke Academie voor Schilderkunst en Beeldhouwkunst, he has had a lasting influence on classical art education in the Netherlands.
